Ruger magazines
How to determine if your pistol needs the retrofit: All LCP pistols bearing prefix “Ruger magazine” (that is, serial number 370-xxxxx) may be affected. Newly manufactured and retrofitted “370” prefix LCP pistols with the new hammer mechanism installed have been marked with a diamond in the flat portion of the slot just behind and below the hammer as show to the right. Going forward, new pistols will be marked with the serial number prefix “371” (serial number 371-xxxxx). Pistols with the “Ruger magazines” prefix are not affected.

Sig Sauer 239 magazines
Sig Sauer 239 magazines was cleaned and lubed before heading out. I soaked the extractor in CLP at the range and cleaned it there. That didn’t make any difference in the frequency of FTEx.
This is a real disappointment for me. I really, really like the way the Sig Sauer 239 magazine feels and points. The trigger was fine and for the 6 times the pistol actually functioned as a auto-loader follow-up shots seemed to be fast. I was hoping that this was going to be my new carry pistol, but that isn’t going to happen until it’s fixed.

Browning hi power magazine
Although it would seem not as ’in demand’ as the Government Model the Browning hi power magazine 1900 pistol magazine Hi-Power has remained a popular offering through our shop. Still an extremely viable weapon system, even in stock form the Hi-Power offers a very attractive blending of size, weight, concealability, and of course a healthy payload of ammo. And for those who favor a 9mm there really may be no better platform for a carry gun… but, despite being lauded by many as “Browning hi power magazines masterpiece”, the guns aren’t exactly perfect from the factory. Many users find the stock sights too small, the thumb safety less than optimal, the hammer a bit too nippy, and the trigger simply not as useable as the Browning’s other jewel the 1911. But at Heirloom Precision we’ve got a little something that addresses all that and more… the SRT conversion.

This is a tactical pen (yeah, I know, I make fun of tactical stuff a lot). In true tactical form, it is both black and more expensive than a regular pen. They can be had at Amazon for about $26, substantially lower in price than similar products. As to what it really is, well, it’s a writing instrument and also a weapon. And it looks cool. It’s just over 5.5 inches long and takes Hauser Parker refills. Also, it is CNC machined from 6061 Airorated Aluminum and Type III hard anodized. I don’t know what that means but since this is a gun blog, I gotta use technical gun type words. It is solid, heavy and, in my limited testing, will go clean through a cantaloupe. Here it is compared to my EeePC for scale:
Here it is with the cap off:
And here it is field stripped:
In addition to slaying melons, it also writes really nice.
Quite happy with it.

Glock 36 magazines
own a G20, 21, 22, & 23, developed the Glock 36 magazines, and have a huge amount of experience with Glocks and I doubt that he’d need any of those because:
1st - He doesn’t need and may not want a ported barrel because the soot from firing it blackens his front sight with one.
2nd - Dual recoil springs in a G35 are both un-necessary and unwise as they upset the slide timing.
3rd - He already has extended controls because the Glock 36 magazine comes stock with a 3.5# connector, an extended Slide Stop Lever, and an extended Magazine Catch.
What he needs is mags and ammo and if he doesn’t have them yet, a good set of night sights. I recommend TruGlo TFOs. They are a bit spendy at $100/set but worth every penny.
BTW: THIS is a truly ‘Tricked Out Glock’. It cost too much but for a 1st ever G20/21L, its worth every penny to me.
Para ordnance p14 magazines
I waited weeks for this gun to come in. I even ordered an extra 50 dollar mag right off the bat. It finally arrives and I do a good fluff and buff and head off to the range with 300 rounds of various .Para ordnance p14 magazines and FMJs. This 900+ dollar gun is a total jam-o-matic. I am bummed and pretty pissed. I would expect this performance from a Taurus but not Para ordnance p14 magazine. I almost got the baby eagle .45 instead and right now Im wishing I did. After the first trip out, yes I did strip it down and detail clean it and all that. Next trip out, same thing. Totally unreliable. I am going to call Para customer service tomorrow and see what they say. Until then two thumbs down on this one.

Trijicon
At first I was hesitant about the smaller Trijicon but now that I’ve tried it out - I completely get it. This scope is SO much easier and I can see myself being ‘faster’ with this ACOG than I could be with any other. Beyond that Trijicon, I’m sure the BDC feature will prove itself useful and entertaining when time permits.

Pistol Holster
Crossbreed IWB is what I’ve carried my P228, G19, and G21SF in with great comfort. The clips on crossbreeds are a wear item, myself and two of my friends who all got crossbreeds about the same time all had to send them back for clip replacement around the two year mark, but we got excellent safariland tactical holsters.
All that said, when I get my next ccw piece, It will be the MTAC.
Are you using it the right way? It’s a retention holster. You have to pull the pistol forward and then up to get it out. Most of the problems I see with these are because the shooter is trying to pull the pistol straight up. The holster is designed to resist that so I can’t grab your pistol from behind gun holsters .
It takes a little practice to make it a natural cowboy holster.
if you plan on foot pursuits, strap it tight or your gun will end up in front of your thigh in about 2 strides. I usually kept mine real snug but unsnapped the top strap if I was not about to jump out because it can get unconfortable when its on for a lTactical holsters.

Beretta 21 Magazine
I’ve had my Beretta 21Magazines (.40 S&W) for over 16 years and thousands of rounds. Only ever replaced the recoil spring as a preventative maintenance thing. Never a problem. Keeps firing every round and is as accurate as the day I bought it. I have spares (including a locking block) but have never needed to replace anything.
The more guns you have, the less rounds you’ll shoot through each, thereby reducing the possibility of breakage.
My favorite load for the Beretta 21Magazine is a 125gr lead TC bullet over 3.9 grains of 231. With this 25000 PSI load the Beretta should last forever. Just in case, I have another on standby.
Alot of people are preoccupied with +P+ and durability. My answer is handload and shoot reduced power loads. This way you get all the pleasure with none of the pain. If you ever have to use your gun defensively, I can guarrantee that you won’t notice the difference in noise or recoil

AK-47
Finally, has anyone ever had an issue with stock screws backing out/coming loose?
I don’t think loc-tite will work, with PLASTIC AK-47 stocks, so I was wondering if a tiny dab of clear silicone would work, to keep the screws from backing out? I have a buddy who has this problem. I know that ak-47 Holster company has always recommended to use a dab of clear silicone, on the threads of their holster screws, to act as a sort of Loc-Tite. The clear silicone has proven to work really well for me in that application.
Anyone else have a better idea, to use on the stock screws, in conjunction with plastic stocks????
Thanks for help with the above questions guys.

Taurus magazines
The .500 S&W produced by Taurus magazines are few and far between these days and appear to be discontinued in their product line. I have searched for one for some time and I’m thinking those that have them will hang on to them…but checks here on the E&E and gunbroker.com may find one.
I think you’ll only get into the 8" model in the Taurus magazines .500.
As an aside, I own every 6.5" Tracker model produced (not including any custom guns) by taurus, 6 weapons in all, and they are fine revolvers. Many will discount the maker based on earlier experiences but their manufacturing processes and customer service have improved temendously.

Sig sauer magazines
I’m not real happy right now. I literally just walked in the door from the range. Out of 102 rounds I fired with my new Sig sauer magazines I had 96 failures to extract.
I was shooting S&B and my carry load. Both had FTEx. The pistol was also dropping the brass from the last round in a magazine and leaving the brass resting on top of the empty mag.
Pistol was cleaned and lubed before heading out. I soaked the extractor in CLP at the range and cleaned it there. That didn’t make any difference in the frequency of FTEx.
This is a real disappointment for me. I really, really like the way the P250 feels and points. AR-15 Accessories and Parts
Sorry, this is not correct. The AR-15 SPR absolutely does indeed use a rifle length gas system.
As far as us ‘enthusiasts’ know, the military has not adopted the mid system in any form yet.
Certainly not in the SPR.
I’m sure some more experienced folks might have more info on this though…
for an 18" build, the one advantage I give the mid and why I have them, is that I personally think that it balances out the gas system better to have AR-15 accessories inches of barrel in FRONT of the gas port rather than ~4.
we had a thread on this before regarding dissapators and gas systems.
The SPR uses a rifle length gas system. Just look at the post by Milla here, you can clearly see the gas tube extending past the KAC rails.

Plaintiff In D.C. Gun Ban Case To Run For U.S. House Seat
Dick Heller, the plaintiff in the Supreme Court case that overturned Washington`s strict 32-year-old handgun ban, announced his candidacy on Thursday for the U.S. House of Representatives.
1. The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.
2. Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose: For example, concealed weapons prohibitions have been upheld under the Amendment or state analogues. The Court’s opinion should not be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms. Miller’s holding that the sorts of weapons protected are those “in common use at the time” finds support in the historical tradition of prohibiting the carrying of dangerous and unusual weapons.
3. The handgun ban and the trigger-lock requirement (as applied to self-defense) violate the Second Amendment. The District’s total ban on handgun possession in the home amounts to a prohibition on an entire class of “arms” that Americans overwhelmingly choose for the lawful purpose of self-defense. Under any of the standards of scrutiny the Court has applied to enumerated constitutional rights, this prohibition—in the place where the importance of the lawful defense of self, family, and property is most acute—would fail constitutional muster. Similarly, the requirement that any lawful firearm in the home be disassembled or bound by a trigger lock makes it impossible for citizens to use arms for the core lawful purpose of self-defense and is hence unconstitutional. Because Heller conceded at oral argument that the D. C. licensing law is permissible if it is not enforced arbitrarily and capriciously, the Court assumes that a license will satisfy his prayer for relief and does not address the licensing requirement. Assuming he is not disqualified from exercising Second Amendment rights, the District must permit Heller to register his handgun and must issue him a license to carry it in the home.

“Arms.” The 18th-century meaning is no different from the meaning today. The 1773 edition of Samuel Johnson’s dictionary defined “arms” as “weapons of offence, or armour of defence.” 1 Dictionary of the English Language 107 (4th ed.) (hereinafter Johnson). Timothy Cunningham’s important 1771 legal dictionary defined “arms” as “any thing that a man wears for his defence, or takes into his hands, or useth in wrath to cast at or strike another.” 1 A New and Complete Law Dictionary (1771); see also N. Webster, American Dictionary of the English Language (1828) (reprinted 1989) (hereinafter Webster) (similar). The term was applied, then as now, to weapons that were not specifically designed for military use and were not employed in a military capacity. For instance, Cunningham’s legal dictionary gave as an example of usage: “Servants and labourers shall use bows and arrows on Sundays, &c. and not bear other arms.” |
Although one founding-era thesaurus limited “arms” (as opposed to “weapons”) to “instruments of offence generally made use of in war,” even that source stated that all firearms constituted “arms.”
Some have made the argument, bordering on the frivolous, that only those arms in existence in the 18th century are protected by the Second Amendment. We do not interpret constitutional rights that way. Just as the First Amendment protects modern forms of communications,e.g., Reno v. American Civil Liberties Union, 521 U. S. 844, 849 (1997), and the Fourth Amendment applies to modernforms of earch, e.g., Kyllo v. United States, 533 U. S. 27, 35–36 (2001), the Second Amendment extends, prima facie, to all instruments that constitute bearable arms, even those that were not in existence at the time of the founding.
Johnson defined “keep” as, most relevantly, “[t]o retain; not to lose,” and “[t]o have in custody.” Johnson 1095. Webster defined it as “[t]o hold; to retain in one’s power or possession.” No party has apprised us of an idiomatic meaning of “keep Arms.” Thus, the most natural reading of “keep Arms” in the Second Amendment is to “have weapons.”
At the time of the founding, as now, to “bear” meant to “carry.” See Johnson 161; Webster; T. Sheridan, A Complete Dictionary of the English Language (1796); 2 Oxford English Dictionary 20 (2d ed. 1989) (hereinafter Oxford). When used with “arms,” however, the term has a meaning that refers to carrying for a particular purpose—confrontation. In Muscarello v. United States, 524 U. S. 125 (1998), in the course of analyzing the meaning of “carries a firearm” in a federal criminal statute, JUSTICE GINSBURG wrote that “[s]urely a most familiar meaning is, as the Constitution’s Second Amendment . . . indicate[s]: ‘wear, bear, or carry . . . upon the person or in the clothing or in a pocket, for the purpose . . . of being armed and ready for offensive or defensive action in a case of conflictwith another person.’ ” Id., at 143 (dissenting opinion) (quoting Black’s Law Dictionary 214 (6th ed. 1998)). We think that JUSTICE GINSBURG accurately captured the natural meaning of “bear arms.” Although the phrase implies that the carrying of the weapon is for the purpose of “offensive or defensive action,” it in no way connotes participation in a structured military organization.
Thus, we do not read the Second Amendment to protect the right of citizens to carry arms for any sort of confrontation, just as we do not read the First Amendment to protect the right of citizens to speak for any purpose.

Daley`s $1 mil. push to buy back guns misfires
Mayor Daley wants to raise $1 million to buy back guns and remove them from Chicago streets, but the latest in a string of corporate fund-raisers got off to a slow start.
Gun Rights For Felons?
The Supreme Court last month voided Washington, DC`s extreme gun ban as a violation of the Second Amendment. Now, across America, public defenders and other lawyers for rapists, robbers and murderers are filing motions contending that their vicious clients have a Second Amendment right to have guns. If this were correct, the Second Amendment would be a very bad thing. Happily, it`s not so.
First, let me say that I have no legal education. What I write comes from a perspective of logic and a reasonable understanding of the English language, dangling participles excluded. Corrections and additions are always welcome.
In the course of judicial review, there are several standards a law can be reviewed under when considering its constitutionality. They are rational basis review, intermediate scrutiny, and strict scrutiny.
Rational basis review is the lowest level of review. In other words, this standard is the most lax at considering whether or not a law is constitutional. The government must only show that the law is a rational action to a legitimate government concern.
Intermediate scrutiny is the next higher level. For a law to pass constitutional muster, it must substantially further an important government interest.
Strict scrutiny is many places referenced as the highest standard of review. Amongst other considerations, strict scrutiny applies to reviews of laws impacting fundamental rights. According to Wikipedia, the law:
First, it must be justified by a compelling governmental interest. While the Courts have never brightly defined how to determine if an interest is compelling, the concept generally refers to something necessary or crucial, as opposed to something merely preferred. Examples include national security, preserving the lives of multiple individuals, and not violating explicit constitutional protections.Second, the law or policy must be narrowly tailored to achieve that goal or interest. If the government action encompasses too much (over-inclusive) or fails to address essential aspects of the compelling interest (under-inclusive), then the rule is not considered narrowly tailored.
Finally, the law or policy must be the least restrictive means for achieving that interest. More accurately, there cannot be a less restrictive way to effectively achieve the compelling government interest, but the test will not fail just because there is another method that is equally the least restrictive. Some legal scholars consider this ‘least restrictive means’ requirement part of being narrowly tailored, though the Court generally evaluates it as a separate prong.
This is the toughest standard to pass for a law to be considered constitutional.
And this is where we get to D.C. v. Heller. For obvious reasons, the D.C. government argued for a rational basis review. It was the standard most likely to provide them a positive outcome.
Holding 3 on page 2 of the decision quickly dispensed with the review standard argument by stating “Under any of the standards of scrutiny the Court has applied to enumerated constitutional rights, this prohibition—in the place where the importance of the lawful defense of self, family, and property is most acute—would fail constitutional muster”. D.C.’s argument was mute. [bold added]
But what of future Second Amendment challenges? This is where we get to footnote 27. It states:
JUSTICE BREYER correctly notes that this law, like almost all laws, would pass rational-basis scrutiny. Post, at 8. But rational-basis scrutiny is a mode of analysis we have used when evaluating laws under constitutional commands that are themselves prohibitions on irrational laws. See, e.g., Engquist v. Oregon Dept. of Agriculture, 553 U. S. ___, ___ (2008) (slip op., at 9–10). In those cases, “rational basis” is not just the standard of scrutiny, but the very substance of the constitutional guarantee. Obviously, the same test could not be used to evaluate the extent to which a legislature may regulate a specific, enumerated right, be it the freedom of speech, the guarantee against double jeopardy, the right to counsel, or the right to keep and bear arms. See United States v. Carolene Products Co., 304 U. S. 144, 152, n. 4 (1938) (“There may be narrower scope for operation of the presumption of constitutionality [i.e., narrower than that provided by rational-basis review] when legislation appears on its face to be within a specific prohibition of the Constitution, such as those of the first ten amendments. . .”). If all that was required to overcome the right to keep and bear arms was a rational basis, the Second Amendment would be redundant with the separate constitutional prohibitions on irrational laws, and would have no effect.Footnote 27 provides us a clue to the future. Any law, to pass a constitutional challenge on Second Amendment grounds, must pass a strict scrutiny test.
The Brady Bunch won’t be announcing this part of the decision.
Update: After letting this post sit for a bit and reading Footnote 27 and Strict Scrutiny over at Say Uncle, I have realized that I jumped too far in conclusion. The more logical conclusion is that Second Amendment challenges will face scrutiny greater than rational basis review. At this point it could be intermediate scrutiny or strict scrutiny.

You`re Just Whistling Dixie …
The District`s new handgun law — with its tight restrictions and bureaucratic registration hoops — is drawing heat. “It reminds me of `massive resistance,`” said Clark Neily, a senior attorney at the Institute for Justice, referring to the Southern states` reaction to the Brown v. Board of Education desegregation decision. “The rhetoric is very similar: `We have a certain way of doing things here. We don`t care what the courts have to say,`” he told NBC4, mocking the city`s response to the Supreme Court`s recent gun-ban decision by comparing it to one of Dixie`s worst periods.
